A place to start
Choose the method before doing the arithmetic
STAT101 introduces statistics and probability with an emphasis on selecting sensible techniques and interpreting results. Before calculating, ask what the data represents and what question you are trying to answer.
Practice prompt: you want to describe typical waiting time for a service, but a few waits are much longer than the rest. Would a mean or a median better describe a typical wait?
- Sketch or sort the waiting times to see their shape and any unusually long waits.
- Compare what the mean and median each represent for this data.
- State your choice in context and mention what the summary leaves out.
Check your reasoning
The median is usually the clearer description of a typical wait here because a few very long waits can pull the mean upward. Still report the long waits separately: a median alone could hide a service problem that matters to the people who waited longest.
An original practice prompt, not a UC assessment question. Topics checked against the UC course description.
How it works
- 1
Send a request
Pick the course and roughly how long you might need (20 minutes or more). In-person requests are temporarily paused.
- 2
Get matched
Your request goes to tutors who got an A-, A or A+ in this exact course. The first to claim it is yours.
- 3
Get unstuck
Meet on video with a shared whiteboard. End whenever you are done.
A course opens for requests as soon as it has enough verified tutors. Lighthouse is for practice and understanding, never for completing assessed work.
Free to join. $30 covers the first 20 minutes of a lesson.
