First-year commerce tutoring at UC
A question in accounting, economics, information systems, management or statistics can hold up the rest of your study. Lighthouse connects you with a UC student who earned an A-, A or A+ in the same paper, when that paper has tutor coverage and an eligible tutor is available online. Work through the point you are stuck on without arranging a weekly lesson.
Find your commerce paper
UC lists ACCT102, ECON104, INFO123, MGMT100 and STAT101 as the five compulsory first-year BCom papers. ACCT103 is an additional accounting paper, not one of those five. Check the current UC BCom requirements for your own programme.

Make a short session useful
- Name the sticking point. “I can calculate a mean, but when should I use a median?” gives a tutor more to work with than “I need statistics help.”
- Show what you tried. Bring your notes or a practice example so the tutor can see which step in your reasoning needs attention.
- Try a similar example yourself. Work through one together, then test whether you can apply the idea independently.
Sessions are for understanding and practice. A tutor cannot complete assessed work for you. Each paper page includes an original practice prompt to help you get started.
How Lighthouse works
Choose your paper and send an online request. Eligible tutors who earned an A-, A or A+ in that paper can claim it when available. The session uses video and a shared whiteboard, and you pay for the time used. A paper opens for requests only when it has enough verified tutors. In-person requests are temporarily paused.

Use the support already available at UC
Your lecturer and course tutors are the best source for official advice about your paper. UC's Academic Skills Centre offers free help with writing and study strategies. Eligible Māori and Pacific students can also use UC's Māori and Pacific tutoring programme. Lighthouse is an additional way to practise a question with a peer who took the same paper.
Lighthouse Tutoring is independent of the University of Canterbury. Check course requirements and descriptions with UC.
