For University of Canterbury students
Earn money tutoring a UC paper you aced
If you earned an A-, A or A+ in a UC course, you may be able to help someone taking that same paper now. Go online when you are free, accept a request you can answer, and help the student practise and understand the work.
At least $45 an hour
A short session pays at the same hourly rate as a longer one. Tutors can receive payouts to their bank account or choose Lighthouse credit to use for tutoring themselves.
You earn for sessions you complete, not for time spent waiting online. Requests depend on student demand and tutor availability, so there are no guaranteed hours or weekly earnings. The rate and your share are shown before you accept each request.
How can I make money tutoring while at UC?
If you are a University of Canterbury student aged 18 or over and earned an A-, A or A+ in a paper, you can apply to tutor that same paper. After your result is verified and your payout setup is complete, go online when you have time. When a student requests help in a paper you are approved for, you can choose whether to accept it.
This is flexible, paid peer tutoring rather than a fixed-hours campus job. You explain concepts and practise questions with the student in an online session. You can also study and tutor through the same account. See the UC course directory for papers students may need help with, then check the tutor agreement for payment details and responsibilities.
How to start tutoring
- 1
Create an account
Lighthouse is for University of Canterbury students aged 18 or over. Your eligibility is checked during tutor onboarding.
- 2
Show the papers you can tutor
Upload your UC transcript. We check your A-, A or A+ course results before you can answer requests for those papers.
- 3
Choose when to be available
Finish the payout setup and go online when you want to take requests. There is no fixed weekly timetable or lesson package to prepare.
First-year commerce papers
We are building tutor coverage for these papers, including ACCT103. Your eligible courses are decided by your verified grades, and you can tutor other UC papers too.
Help students learn, not hand in your work
Sessions are for explaining concepts and working through practice. Tutors must not complete assessed work for a student. Read the academic integrity policy and tutor agreement before applying.
